What does leverage actually do to a trading bot?

Leverage lets your bot control a position larger than its margin. Post $1,000 at 10x and the bot trades a $10,000 notional. Every price move, every fee, and every funding payment is calculated on that $10,000, not on your $1,000.

That last part is what people miss. Leverage does not only amplify your directional P&L — it amplifies costs that have nothing to do with being right. It is a multiplier on the whole position: edge and drag alike, scaled by the same number.

How leverage sets your liquidation distance

This is the number that matters. Your leverage directly sets how far price can move against you before the exchange force-closes the position.

The rough rule for an isolated position: liquidation happens at about (100% / leverage) minus the maintenance margin. Concrete adverse-move distances, ignoring the small maintenance-margin haircut:

Look at 100x. A single 0.5% wick — routine noise on any crypto chart, the kind that prints dozens of times a day — ends the trade. At 20x, one ordinary 5% candle does it. Bitcoin has 5% days regularly; alts have 5% hours. High leverage does not need you to be wrong about direction. It just needs one bad wick while you are right.

Cross margin changes the picture: instead of losing one position's isolated margin, a liquidation can pull from your entire balance. It buys more distance but raises the stakes of a single bad event to your whole account.

The cost most people forget: funding and fees scale with notional

Fees and funding are charged on notional, so leverage multiplies them against your margin. This is the quiet killer of leveraged bots.

Take funding. Say it runs 0.01% per 8-hour interval — a calm, typical rate. That is roughly 0.03% a day, or about 11% a year on notional. At 10x leverage that is around 110% a year measured against your margin. Your bot can be perfectly delta-neutral and still bleed the account on funding alone if it sits on the crowded side. Funding rates deserve their own read before you run any leveraged perp bot.

Fees compound the same way. A 0.045% taker fee per side is about 0.09% round trip on notional. At 10x that is roughly 0.9% of your margin per round trip. A high-frequency bot doing hundreds of round trips a week can hand its entire edge to fees once leverage magnifies them.

Notice the pattern: the higher the asset's volatility, the lower the ceiling. A 3x position on a coin that moves 3% a day carries the same liquidation risk as a much higher multiple on BTC. From a risk standpoint, volatility and leverage are the same dial — turning one up means turning the other down.

How much leverage is too much for a bot?

Simple test: if a normal daily range for your asset could liquidate you, you are over-leveraged. Full stop.

Work backwards from the chart, not from the maximum the exchange offers. Venues happily hand out 50–100x because liquidations are profitable for them, not because they are survivable for you. If your asset routinely moves 8% in a day and your leverage puts liquidation at 9%, you are one slightly-above-average day from zero. Size so liquidation sits well outside anything you would see in a normal week — several times the typical daily range.

Why leveraged bot backtests lie to you

A backtest that ignores liquidation is fiction. Most naive backtests compute P&L on the mark price and never check whether an intraday wick would have blown the position first. Add realistic liquidation logic and the same “profitable” 20x strategy often shows a string of total losses that a smooth equity curve quietly hid.

Backtests also tend to understate funding and assume optimistic fills — both of which leverage magnifies. A strategy that looks great at 10x on paper is frequently one that was overfit to a window without a sharp wick. Backtest overfitting covers why the prettiest curves are the most dangerous. Before trusting any leveraged bot, force the backtest to model funding, fees on notional, and an intraday liquidation check — then judge it on the drawdown, not the headline return.

None of this means leverage is always wrong. It means most retail leveraged bots lose money after costs, and the ones that do not treat leverage as a scarce resource spent on a tested edge, not a default cranked to the exchange maximum.
